Google Hacks V1.1 Feb 5, 2008 0:52:02 AM

Use Google's search engine hidden features to search for music, books, videos, lyrics, fonts...

The open source Google Hacks project is now a widget!

Search the Internet using not well-known tricks to search for music, books, videos, lyrics, fonts, applications and torrents. Also includes ways to detect password vulnerabilities, to access web pages through an (insecure) proxy and to find cached copies of web pages.

Hacks is meant as this definition. "A Hack is a modification of a program or device to give the user access to features otherwise were unavailable to them. " Taken from Wikipedia.

In the spirit of the Google sponsored Google Hacks project, this widget is strictly for legal purposes only.

Change log:
- By default, animations are disabled.
- Added dynamic resizing.
- Fixed Relient K bug.
- Removed web hosting search.
- Description enlarged.

Would be nice if you could choose whether it should open a new tab or reuse the active one :-)

By the way, if any one else discovers any bugs, why not use the 'report a problem' function? It's there for a reason!

Thanks GreyWyvern for testing this widget so thoroughly. This is the second time I've regretted releasing this widget so soon, as it does need more testing. I guess I better label this widget as beta before any worse bugs are discovered.

(Continuing in a new comment since long ones seem to be truncated)

- Occasionally the widget would completely stop responding to almost any input, usually after switching between certain searches. For instance, this is reproducable for me: Select Web Hosting, then select Cache and try to highlight the search field. For me it is always unselectable.
- Submit doesn't seem to work with the Web Hosting search.

A great widget. I love the music, fonts, applications and torrent searches, but the widget itself could use some serious cleanup. Hope this comment was helpful!

Some comments...
- The bottom of the animated options window goes beyond the window area of the widget itself so it gets cut off. You should expand the height of the widget so the whole thing can be seen.
- Some of the searches didn't make sense to me. I searched for a font and the query began with "Relient K" by default. Is that part of the hack? Also, my query string for the font was not separated from the "hack" part of the search by a space so it failed before it even began.
- For some of the tools options, it was difficult to find out what exactly you needed to search for. Some options require a URL, while some need just a search term. You could probably divide this up into two sections, or give a longer description in the area under the search field. Also a typo here: "see who is linking to you site"
- Sometimes, after clicking back and forth between the types of searches, the options for some or all searches wouldn't appear. This seemed to happen randomly and then suddenly start working again.
- When I tried the proxy search for a site, Google told me that an English to English translation was not supported.
(cont'd above)
