Now make it usable, add date and time Well actually it is usable, and not just an academic curiosity for the mathematically inclined, it can be used to teach about seasons for example.
1) It updates once a minute. 2) It should account for seasons; note that the shadow doesn't pass through the poles yet. It will on the equinox, if working correctly.
1) Does it update periodically while the widget is open? Or is it set only once when it is opened?
2) Does the shading rotate about the poles only, or does it account for seasonal axial tilt? The sun is currently shining pretty close to the equator so it is hard to tell.
Those extra polys make all the difference - very, very nice! Now you just need to tie into Twitter, or a news service with location data, plot a few flashing lights....!
~100 more polygons makes it 1000x better! It is a simple globe you don't need a java applet for, or a real globe.
★★★★★ !
EDIT: You could shave another 3kB off the widget by optimizing the close button PNG. It is only 15x45 but it is oversaved at 4kB! You could chop it down to an optimized 64 color PNG at about 1kB.
I wish Opera would distribute optimized version of these graphics in the first place...
Update- v1.1; Two notes: -I've removed the visible seams with a little hack, at the expense of a little distortion. -I spent the last hour researching the opera-2dgame context, and have speeded up the drawing a little.

Though maybe I should look into a time set option...

Great job! Now I know when it's night at the Opera office
EDIT: Man, just have to say; this is quite amazing!
EDIT #2: You should put up a new screenshot!

-Now shades the night side based on the current time and date.

But it'll have to wait until I catch up on homework.

Add an option to shade the globe where it's currently night, and account for the earth's seasonal axial tilt.
Think that is possible?

I really appreciate the feedback!

-I've added 108 more triangles, so it actually looks like a proper globe now.
Surprisingly, there wasn't much of a performance hit in doing so. Worth a re-download.

@dantesoft: Good catch. That's what I get for developing on Windows... I've submitted a fix.
