Password Hasher V1.0 Jul 10, 2006 2:21:03 AM

Password hasher creates secure passwords by performing an HMAC SHA1 hash of a general parameter (Gmail, Yahoo!, etc) and a "master password" provided by the user. This generates passwords that are safe from dictionary-based attacks and all of it is client-side, so no information is transferred to a server and you only have to remeber two relatively simple passwords. Password hasher is based on code from www.hashapass.com.

Excellent tool, but I think font in input fields should also be set in style sheet. Opera defaults to "Arial" on Windows XP, which makes it impossible to distinguish between capital I (i) and small l (L). Other fonts gives you the same problem with letter O and number 0 or small l (L) and number 1. This becomes a problem when you hit one of those sites that doesn't allow you to paste passwords.

I know the default font can be chanced in preferences, but that isn't obvious to everybody. Besides, fonts that distinguish well between problematic characters isn't always very pleasing to the eye and suited for general use. The best compromise among common fonts is probably "Courier New". "DejaVu Sans Mono", which Opera defaults to on my Linux distro, is another good choice.

Hi,
what about a version which doesn't show the hashed password? I'm using this widget, but it's not that good when using it on a public pc. Everyone looking over your shoulder can see your parameter and your actual hashed password. In firefox, there's an add on that can hide everything (so not even yourself know your password) and then automatically pass it to the field (there's a field marker besides every password field on websites.)

Any planes to do this? Would be perfect. Sometimes I use firefox just for this feature.

Greetings and thanks for the app!

Hi --- I have a TON of passwors and userids stored inside AI RoboForm. Can you migrate these - into Password Hasher? Also - someone also asked about filling in other forms automatically ... not sure if one can do this - with this widget. THANKS!

I've put a javascript implementation of this here

http://www.sanctuary.eclipse.co.uk/PassGen/

It generates the same passwords (if you put in the same parameters) so you can still find your passwords when opera isn't available. It's set to 16 chars at the moment, I might add a length field later. Take the leftmost 8 chars for 8 char password etc.

I can't believe I didn't think of that. Thanks.

You have to click on the word "Hash" after entering the parameter and password. It is not really clear because of the dark background but the "Hash" word is on a button which executes the action.

This widget does not appear to work. What am I doing wrong? I fill in the first two fields and press return or click the button, but no password is generated.

???

Awesome, I was waiting for one of these to come around for Opera, since I know Firefox had one. Thanks!

As for not being able to log on, you can go to www.hashapass.com and do it there, the widget just makes it easier. Just like.... Email yourself a link to hashpass marked "ALL MY PASSWORDS" or something ^_~
