eduMap provides a fun way to learn the location of countries, states and capitals. Includes multiple maps, high scores and different playing modes.
Always wanted to learn the location of each African country? How about capitals of U.S. states? Maybe you never had a chance to learn all the names of all independent European nations since 1991?
The eduMap widget provides a fun way to learn the location of countries, states and capitals. Select either a full continent or a subsection of countries, then be quizzed on their locations. In the default mode, just hover over a country or state and discover its name, capital, area and population.
Different quiz modes are available to help you lean in a variety of ways. High scores are recorded on your system, based on percentage correct and completion time. 100% SVG based, so you can resize the widget to whatever size is preferred without any quality loss.
Currently Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and the USA are available. More maps may be added in the future.
Once you click on the drop down arrow, you should just be able to click on the language that appears in the list to proceed. I agree that there should probably be a button to be clicked after that to conform with common interfaces.
I just tried this and it gets stuck on the language-select screen in Opera/9.24 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X; U; en) with Java installed. I'm clicking around the black space hoping to find any section that might function as OK or Go. I have already tried 'enter' and 'return' and double-clicking the ellipse in the thought bubble and the language selection drop-down list.
I haven't tried this yet, but do you realise that each nation and state have a capital, not a "capitol"? That spelling is exclusively used for one building in Washington DC.
Whoops, I forgot to update the version number in last update. So it'll say 2.0 despite actually being 2.1.
@skulldyvan - Thanks! 1. Yeah, I noticed it do that on some versions of Opera I tried, it works fine on others. I'll see if it's something I can fix somehow. 2. Good point, thanks for the suggestion. 3. Hmm, I think it's really taking the last flag it loaded from any previous map, and displays it. Thanks for noticing that. (Note that US state flags are intentionally absent)
Wow! Nice improvements and almost doesn't lag at all! Still, just small notes: - the circle sometimes (lmost allways) doesn't get smaller to show the country on the map but remains just like that on the map until it has to show another country. - it would look better if (in location->flag mode) the flags would be a little aligned so it doesn't get over the interface(start/stop and zoom window). It doesn't impair functionality, it would just be more visually pleasing.
Note: I've just discovered that the Africa and Oceania maps don't appear in Opera 9.2 for Windows. This has been fixed for the next version (should be available May 13th).
Changelog for 2.0: - Added zoom box - Added Oceania map - Fixed "show completed countries" checkbox - Balanced Africa subregion counts - Made text no longer selectable - Made incorrect countries blink to indicate location - Added missing hover effects to buttons - Added larger click areas for island nations - Improved Russian translations (thanks to Алексей and others that submitted fixes!)
Opera 9.5 only: - Added flag display in learning mode - Added flag->location mode - Added location->flag mode
Hey everyone, I've been gone for a while, but have now returned. I expect to post version 2.0 of eduMap with significant additional features by the end of the week. Most of the work's already been done, just have some bugs to fix.
Oh, and I've received three fixed Russian translations already, no need for any more thank you!
@skulldyvan - That's a great idea and probably something I'll add in a future version (not 2.0 yet though)
@kitt - Initially I didn't add Austalia because just Australia and New Zealand didn't seem like enough countries to warrant another map to learn from. However, you'll be happy to hear that I've added an Oceania map in 2.0.
@Bloggs-Freddo - What operating system do you use and which version of Opera?
I doubt it would be implemented but an Idea like this (good one in my opinion) stroke me:the ability to individually choose what the widget shows and individually choose what you have to answer like this: Show: Country \/ Answer: Capital \/ If future development is planned this would make choosing easier and more complex. (the \/ means a "down" arrow)
- Clicking on a country only does something when you've started a game (using the "Start!" button). If you mean in-game, there does seem to be an issue with Opera where SVG widgets don't always receive clicks properly. Not sure what to do about that one. - The pinkish hover effect you describe is for the purpose of highlighting a country to receive information on it (see box on bottom-left) - What text exactly is covered when the map is redrawn? (and during which redraw does this occur?) - Anything else I can clarify?
Don't get it. Clicking on the country doesn't select it. Moving the mouse over any country even before you start changes its colour to pinkish. Options button doesn't work. When it redraws the map at the top it covers over parts of the text. Etc.
@skulldyvan - Alright, I'll see if I can fix that. - The divisions are based on the UN subregions of Africa, which admittedly seems based on area rather than nation count. I guess it shouldn't hurt if I were to tweak that a bit.
Another thing: Comoros is barely clickable. And Africa seems kinda weirdly divided:in the north and south are too few while the west east and central are too many. This makes it kinda difficult to me to learn them.
Very nice widget, got a couple of suggestions: - Sometimes it can be hard to see when countries get marked red, maybe flash them once or twice - With effects it's extremely slow
Macedonia is GREEK

* The Start button doesn't work
* Options doesn't work
* The magenta highlighting of countries happens out of games
* There is no information bottom left
* I can't get the covering over of text to happen again
I just tried reinstalling it, there are some changes but it still generally doesn't work.
