3D Globe, Opera application V3.0 2007/08/21 4:47:01

A globe that you can rotate through three degrees of freedom by clicking and dragging. Use the handle to move the actual widget.

Technically not a true globe, but with 128 facets, who cares?

Now with night side shading!

Man, hard to believe it's been a year since I've done this. I probably could stand to refresh it.

Larger would be nice; I need to ensure that won't kill performance, though.

Lights would be nice too, but may need to wait until I've cleaned this up.

Handy little widget.

<Nice one!>

Can you please allow me to put markers on it as for instance the latest earthquakes?

(And I want it enlarged if you please.)

</Nice one!>

This is nice to see, thanks.

I think there are plenty of normal date/time widgets already...

Though maybe I should look into a time set option...

Tangent128 作 , # 2007/09/23 19:44:33

Now make it usable, add date and time
Well actually it is usable, and not just an academic curiosity for the mathematically inclined, it can be used to teach about seasons for example.

This is awesome. I feel like moving the globe in the wii.

yeeliberto 作 , # 2007/09/14 15:37:17

Yup. I left it open for an hour or so and it looks like it's working

Great job! Now I know when it's night at the Opera office

EDIT: Man, just have to say; this is quite amazing!
EDIT #2: You should put up a new screenshot!

GreyWyvern 作 , # 2007/09/10 19:59:46

1) It updates once a minute.
2) It should account for seasons; note that the shadow doesn't pass through the poles yet. It will on the equinox, if working correctly.

Tangent128 作 , # 2007/09/10 17:41:20

Two questions about the shading...

1) Does it update periodically while the widget is open? Or is it set only once when it is opened?

2) Does the shading rotate about the poles only, or does it account for seasonal axial tilt? The sun is currently shining pretty close to the equator so it is hard to tell.

Update- v3.0
-Now shades the night side based on the current time and date.

Tangent128 作 , # 2007/09/10 3:14:14

Those extra polys make all the difference - very, very nice! Now you just need to tie into Twitter, or a news service with location data, plot a few flashing lights....!

johnnysaucepn 作 , # 2007/08/28 13:33:53

Yes... I even have an idea as to how to do it...

But it'll have to wait until I catch up on homework.

Tangent128 作 , # 2007/08/24 23:38:54

Okay, so how about this, smart guy:

Add an option to shade the globe where it's currently night, and account for the earth's seasonal axial tilt.

Think that is possible? :D

GreyWyvern 作 , # 2007/08/24 23:06:23

Well, my skills are more in geometry than image editors, so I'll probably just make an SVG close button in the next version.

I really appreciate the feedback!
