You want to know [cm] of what? Your screen? Element on your screen? Provide me yours display size (or its dot size) and resolution and I'll count it for you. Picture you want to print? Provide me DPI of the picture, and its size, and I'll count it also.
You see, I've made simple pixel ruler, and this is not tool to measure cm. Sorry.
Here comes new version with precise position control. You can move widget with arrows keys. While "Ctrl" key is pressed, arrows keys let you move position marker. Don't forget to focus widget first - if you just run it, it isn't focused yet. You have to click it (with mouse pointer). And now bad news. This feature doesn't work on Linux - sorry.
Hi unfortunately you right When I run "directly" widget - I can change color. While I download it from website - I can't. Fix will comming. I hope soon!
@ Cygnus - thanks for details. I've run it on Linux - yes - have the same. I'll try to find out what's wrong.
I noticed it was not just for the vertical mode but for both. I am on Kubuntu linux, Opera 9.01.
More in detail:
1. Open the widget (it's in horizontal mode) 2. Click and drag the ruler to the right 3. The measure-line will now stay in the same position relative the background desktop and not move along with the ruler. 4. When I stop dragging the ruler the measure-line is no not asynced with the mouse with the equal length that I dragged the ruler.
( I tried it on a Fedora Core 2 machine also with the same result. )
@ Cygnus: Can you describe it bit more? How many pixels this difference is? Do you have standard cursors, or you using some kind of "fancy" cursor pack? What OS you have?
Actually I had use for this today (instead of launching gimp and measure from there). But there seem to be a problem when you move the ruler vertically in vertical mode as the "measure-line" will no longer by synced with the mouse pointer.
@ basti2015, BtEO: It is rather difficult to develop anything without simple ruler. You just have to know how many pixels you need to fit text or picture in for example, table or inside your widget.
I'm afraid that I don't quite understand.

There is support for Linux, however there is no transparency support. So it is rather simple ruler.
