touchtheWire V1.11 2006/05/29 3:07:11

Touch the red wire, see if it's live! This is a flexible website monitoring tool - up to 10 pages at a time, configurable audio alerts, custom update frequencies and status reports.

Update: fixed for security model of latest betas.

Use it to check on your favourite sites when the server monkeys are playing up, or monitor your own servers.

An alert sound (if selected) will play when a site goes off-line, even if the widget is running in the background. Select different update frequencies for different sites, or temporarily disable any of them with a click.

Different status icons show whether the server is up, down, or 'up but not responding correctly'.

Standards-compliant - uses valid XHTML 1.0, valid CSS, completely separated code/style/scripting, even makes use of the Web Apps 1.0 Audio object! Object-oriented style code, with exception handling for security violations.

Any chance it could be configured to check an individual host? It would be killer if it could periodically throw a ping to some of my machines and report back... so instead of checking if http://www.google.com is up you could for example look directly at the machine foobar.google.com (assuming it's got a public IP)

@gun, Widget security restrictions don't allow a widget that has previously accessed the internet to access local servers, or vice versa.

This help to reduce the chance of malicious widgets transferring data from one zone to the other.

The original version of this widget was written before this restriction was put into place - I've never gone back to rewrite it in a different way. I'd probably force the user to choose 'local mode' or 'remote mode' at installation, so you'd have to have two copies to monitor both.

You say "... or monitor your own servers.". Why cant I monitor servers in my LAN? It says "Security violation". A look into the addressfield of my configuered server shows, that a http:// was added to my lokal server address. Is this the same bug of Opera 9.1, that prevents me to use nicknames as homepage?

So what exactly is this supposed to do? I've had it running for a couple of weeks, monitoring one of my web servers. As it turns out, the server has been down for days. This widget has been humming along as if everything was fine. I clicked the "refresh" button (I didn't think I would have to refresh the widget, otherwise I'd just refresh a copy of the web page), and the widget is now stuck on an hourglass.

I can check the site by visiting the site just as easily.

You should add a function that lets you view the site. Once I know a site is updated, I want to look at it.

Or, as someone else put it, "I think it would be usefull to have a "connect" button to quickly go to the selected site."

I monitor a lot of chess sites and this is a good way to keep up with them.

This is useful as it tells me when the server is being updated. Would it be possible to add more than 10 addresses as I need to monitor more.

Fantastic widget!

Is it possible to add an "always on top" option?

Edit: Ignore the last line, I was using an earlier build (of Opera) which didn't include "always on top" for all widgets.

Okay, I see the problem. That site is proving a header of "location: http://ipods.traxio.net/", when the widget is expecting a capital L in Location:.

発言者 johnnysaucepn, # 2006/06/05 13:40:03

I was trying to add a friend of mine's site http://www.traxio.net (because he hosts my site) and it redirects to ipods.traxio.net ipods.traxio.net worked fine but the main site didn't it came up with a security violation.
edit- in the newest it says service unavailable.

Fixed for security model problems in latest weeklies.

発言者 johnnysaucepn, # 2006/06/03 14:21:38

Do you have an example? There was extra code to handle redirections that Opera was only half-handling, but that still seems to work for me. I'll try a clean install.

発言者 johnnysaucepn, # 2006/06/03 13:45:02

Ah, just noticed now that it works in the latest weekly (should update the descrip) that when you put in an url that redirects to another it says service unavailable..I wouldn't know if you can even get it to work with sites like that though so lol gl trying.

発言者 Tmchenry, # 2006/06/03 2:59:51

Only opera community seems to work in the latest weekly..even on linux...it has more functionality than most other widgets on the latest weekly though lol. Good concept though and nice transitions looks awsome.

Also, it's nice to see a useful widget instead of just a game widget.

Edit- nevermind it only works with the latest weekly if you have a page of the website open that you want to monitor.

発言者 Tmchenry, # 2006/06/01 1:59:29

I only had the one week to start this from scratch (although I obviously re-used some of my previous code), piecing it together in the fragments of time I could get. So, yes, I did leave myself a few avenues for development and re-entry into the competition!

発言者 johnnysaucepn, # 2006/05/31 2:28:43

Slick little thingie. Thanks.

I think it would be usefull to have a "connect" button to quickly go to the selected site.

Also, it would be nice to define some regexp to monitor changes on web pages. But that would be quite a lot of work, would need normal ajax request and probably most people wouldn't know how to define regexp's... maybe for version 1.0?

Me goes to think about some use for this widget... maybe monitoring if my home computer is up or something...
